You’ve had enough stress caused by modern life and you want to hide from it, at least for a short while? Here are five tips on how to turn your bedroom into a vintage hideaway.
Use restored furniture
If you want your bedroom to have that vintage vibe, you should incorporate the adequate furniture. The best thing you can do is to use restored furniture. You have two options here – you can either get old pieces of furniture and restore them yourself or buy already restored ones. The first option will probably save you some money, and if you’re handy, you can actually make your furniture look exactly as you imagined it. Nevertheless, before you buy a used piece, think carefully about the cost and the time it will take you to fix it. It may not be worth the effort if it’s too expensive or too damaged. Another option is to visit one of the stores which specialize in restoring old furniture and see if you like any of the pieces they offer.
Before you buy or do anything, opt for a specific time period and do your research. Find ideas online or in magazines, but try to stick to only one era, otherwise, your bedroom won’t make much sense. Once you decide on a certain period, find furniture, decorations and even wallpapers to match that period. Get materials that were used during that time and decorate your bedroom accordingly. You might even consider painting the floors to achieve a certain style o going for a specific porcelain tile. Be sure to choose the color patterns wisely. You want your bedroom to be a harmonic place, pleasant for the eye, so don’t use colors that don’t agree with your temperament. You’re the one who has to spend their time there, so you want everything in it to be to your liking.
Once you’ve chosen the furniture and the prevailing colors, it’s time to accessorize. Here you can go all in. If you think bed covers and cushions won’t be enough for you, you can even get a canopy for your bed. Get drapes and curtains to match the look you want to create. Choosing the right material and patterns can make a huge difference. Opt for a carpet or an IPF wooden floor to complement the style of the room, get lamps with interesting shades or even install a ceiling fan. However, be careful. If you’re not skilled enough with wires and electricity, it would be best to hire a professional Sydney electrician to install it for you.
Get secondhand items
One perk of having a vintage bedroom is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money on new things. Secondhand items can even be the best option in your case. Don’t miss out on your neighborhood garage or yard sales, visit your local flea markets and go through the nearby thrift shops. You might find beautiful antique clocks, paintings or mirrors you can buy for very little money. Plus, if your friends or family members have old things they don’t use or like any more, you can take those off their hands and blend them in with the rest of your bedroom.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with small DIY projects, such as decoupage picture frames or mason jars turned into flower pots or vases. You may have some old things around your house you can clean, fix, repurpose and reuse. Roll up your sleeves and use your imagination. Put your old footlocker at the foot of your bed. It will give you some storage space and you can turn it into a seating space by throwing some cushions on top of it. Also, little things like hinges, knobs and drawer pulls can further elevate the vintage vibe in your bedroom.
Make your bedroom a warm and cozy place you’ll want to go back to every day or night. It may take some time and patience, but once you’re in your vintage bed, reading a good book underneath your vintage lamplight, it will all be worth it.
